History, Background, and Story of the Discovery
The background and story of cholesterol is a long and on going study.
1). The first Discovery was in 1706 when Cholesterol was found by François Poulletier de la Salle. He was studying gallstones and found the Cholesterol in its solid form. This was in France.
2). Though the Compound was found in 1706, it wasn't officially named untill 1815. "Michel Eugène Chevreul isolated and purified the sterol from gallstones and named it 'cholesterol' (Greek, chol for bile plus stereos for solid)" (Hoefner). *see photo below
3). In 1838 Cholesterol was confirmed to be found in the human body blood by Louis René Lecanu.
After all of these great progressions in the discovery of Cholesterol everyone went to study it more in depth in the biology aspect of it all and how it is used in the human body. In 2006 they started to make money off Atorvastatin. This is a medicine prescribed to lower Cholesterol among some other things.
